Claude L. Shearer

August 16, 1916 — June 19, 2010

Claude L. Shearer, 93, died unexpectedly Saturday afternoon, June 19, 2010 at the Maples, Goshen.  He was born in South Whitley, Indiana on August 16, 1916 to the late George and Ellen (Bunch) Shearer.  He married Martha E. Bates in South Whitley on April 18, 1945.  She preceded him in death on January 25, 2000.  Mr. Shearer was an office manager for Grand Prairie Co-op, Tolono, Illinois.  After his retirement he worked for 10 years at H&R Block.  He graduated from South Whitley High School.  He then served in the U.S. Army during World War II.  He served in Egypt in the Courier Service, five years active duty and 10 years in the reserves.  He attended First United Methodist Church, Tolono, and First United Church Life Center, Goshen.  He is survived by two children, Betty McKnight, Goshen, and George Shearer, Sykesville, Maryland.  He was a “grandfather” to 16 international students that his daughter hosted over 10 years.  His body will be cremated and there will be a private family service at a later date.  Memorials may be made out to the First United Methodist Church Life Center, Goshen, or to the United Cancer Service of Elkhart County.
