Charles A. Sloan, 92, of Goshen, died early Wednesday morning, May 22, 2013, at Greencroft Goshen Healthcare. He was born November 13, 1920 in Patoka to John and Viva Myrtle (Finch) Sloan. He married Frances Wright February 4, 1949 in Princeton. She survives along with a daughter, Sandra Kae (John C.) Benham, Cumming, Ga.; four grandchildren, John Michael Benham. St. Louis, Mo., Lisa Rice, Provo, Utah, Cindy Cook, Winter Garden, Fla., and Amy Brown, Anapamu, Calif.; two step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Henry, Perry, Joe, John Robert and Ralph Sloan; a step-brother, George; and a step-sister, Nora Potter. A Goshen resident since 2008, Mr. Sloan graduated from Patoka High School in 1938. He served with the US Army during World War II in the Philippines. A tool maker, he worked for Fisher Body, a division of General Motors in Marion for 30 years until retiring in 1987. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion of Princeton, Ind. While in Marion he volunteered with many groups and on many church committees. He served as a board member of the UAW Care Share program. He enjoyed gardening, especially raising tomatoes. He was a fan of I.U. basketball and St. Louis Cardinals baseball. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, May 24, 2013, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. Friends may also call from 10 until the 11 a.m., (CST) funeral service on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at the Patoka United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Decker Cemetery, Patoka. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, Goshen or Patoka United Methodist Church.
