Charles L.R. "Chuck" Stephens, 82, of Goshen, died Tuesday morning, October 21, 2014, at IU Health Goshen Hospital. He had been ill since June. He was born Aug. 4, 1932 in Wildwood, Michigan to Raymond and Rose (Williams) Stephens. On June 11, 1960 he married Mary (Baker) Gibson in LaPorte. She survives along with two sons, Ronald Stephens, Angola and Roger Stephens, Phillippines; three daughters, Roxanne Buzzard, Angola, Robin (Perry) Yoder, Shipshewana and Rebecca (Dana) Stanley, Topeka; 15 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; a brother, Frank Stephens, Watersmeet, Mich.; and five sisters, Anna Dreibelbis, Shirley Turner, Barbara Tello, Raeann Stephens and Millie Kuta; and a brother, Frank Stephens. A Goshen resident since 1962, Mr. Stephens worked for Elkhart County Highway Department for eight and a half years until retiring in 1985. He had also worked for the Goshen Water and Sewer Department for ten years. A Korean War veteran, Mr. Stephens served with the Army from 1950 to 1955. He was an avid reader of Christian literature, enjoyed woodworking and was known for the "scrapping" he did for the last 20 years. In keeping with Chuck's wishes, his body will be cremated. A Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014, memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., at West Goshen Church of the Brethren. Pastor Norm Replogle will officiate. Burial will follow in West Goshen Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Heart Association or American Lung Association.
