Carl M. Metzler, 90, of Goshen, passed away Sunday, July 3, 2022 at Greencroft Healthcare.
He was born Dec. 13, 1931, in Masontown, Pennsylvania, to A.J. and Alta (Maust) Metzler.
On June 6, 1953, he married Doris Gunden in Goshen.
She survives along with three children, Jane Metzler of Goshen, Linda (Christopher Gill) Metzler of Berrien Springs, Michigan and Robert (Cathy) Metzler of Marietta, Georgia; four grandchildren, Ryan (Jessica), Sara, Martina (John) and Joshua (Erin); a great-grandson, Johnny; sisters, Alice (Willard) Roth, and Joyce (Jep) Hostetler, both of Goshen and a brother, A. Jay (Jill) Metzler of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy (Lawrence) Brunk and a brother Edgar (Ethel) Metzler.
He retired from The Upjohn Company (now Pfizer), Kalamazoo, as a mathematician in research and development, where he was awarded the Upjohn Award for Achievement in Science and Medicine. He also designed and developed a computer program, NONLIN, for studying pharmacokinetic/dynamics. He was a Fellow of American Statistical Association and of American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists. After retirement in 1994 he worked as a private consultant for six years.
After moving to Goshen in 1998, they became members of College Mennonite Church. They were active members of Skyridge Church of the Brethren, Kalamazoo for 32 years.
Dr. Metzler graduated from Goshen College in 1955 and earned his doctorate from North Carolina State University in 1965.
Services will be held July 16, 2022 at 11:00am in the Alta and AJ Metzler Meeting House, located in the Healthcare Building, 1225 Greencroft Dr., on the Greencroft Goshen campus. Visitation will be from 9:30-10:45 in the same location. Facial masking will be required. Food and fellowship will follow at Juniper Place Dining Hall, also located on the Greencroft Goshen Campus.
Memorial gifts may be given to College Mennonite Church Ministry fund or the AJ/Alta Metzler Scholarship at Goshen College.
