C. Stanley Berkey, 93, of Goshen, died early Sunday morning, March 4, 2007, at Goshen General Hospital where he had been for three weeks. He was born on December 21, 1913, in Amboy, Iowa, to L.W. and Chloe (Johnson) Berkey. He married Mary Catherine Culp on June 6, 1936, in Goshen. She preceded him on January 26, 2007. A life long resident of the area, Mr. Berkey retired from Western Rubber in 1978 and from Mid-West Commerce Bank in 1992. A member of the Brenneman Memorial Missionary Church since 1939, he served as a deacon for more than 30 years and in 2002 was honored as Deacon Emeritus. He also taught the Faith Builders Sunday School class for more than 25 years and sang in the choir. He graduated from Concord High School in 1932 and was a member of the Emmaus Community. He was an avid gardener. Mr. Berkey is survived by two daughters, Joyce Furfaro and Jeanette (Robert) Salisbury, both of Goshen; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, two daughters, June and Jolene in a car/train accident on February 25, 1960; a sister, Miriam Bainter and a brother, Burnette Berkey. Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, March 8, at the Brenneman Memorial Missionary Church in the fireplace room. An 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 9, 2007, funeral service will be held at the Brenneman Memorial Missionary Church. Pastor Bill Richardson and retired Pastor George Nantz will officiate. Burial will be in West Goshen Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethel College.
