Betty J. Helman, 87, of Wakarusa and formerly of Goshen, died Wednesday afternoon, July 14, 2010, at Miller's Merry Manor, where she had been a resident the last nine years. She was born in Goshen on December 11, 1922 to the late William and Tressa J. (Rupholdt) McQueen.  She married R. Harvey "Harv" Helman on December 11, 1940.  He died April 20, 1973. A lifetime Goshen resident, she graduated from Goshen High School in 1940.  She retired January 15, 1988, as assistant buyer for Goshen Rubber Company, after 25 years.  Mrs. Helman was a longtime, active member of Trinity Lutheran Church.  In her youth she was a very good bowler, winning many pins, medals and trophies through her participation in women's bowling leagues in Goshen.  She was also an accomplished bridge player, often hosting her bridge club through the years.  She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. She is survived by a daughter, Beverly (Michael) Stringfellow of Goshen; two sons, Rev. James (Sherry) Helman of Traverse City, Michigan and John (Michelle) Helman of Granger; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert McQueen. Private graveside services were held Friday, July 16, 2010, in Violett Cemetery with Pastor John Hickey of Trinity Lutheran Church, Goshen, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Miller's Merry Manor, Wakarusa.
