Betty Chiss, 86, of Goshen, died early Friday afternoon, January 5, 2007, at her home. She was born February 20, 1920, in Goshen, to Samuel and Rose (Carp) Burnstein. She married Max L. Chiss on August 1, 1942, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He died November 27, 2002. Mrs. Chiss, a lifetime resident of Goshen, worked for the telephone company in Goshen during World War II. She was a member of the Temple Bethel in South Bend. She served as a Blue Birds and Campfire Girls Leader. She was a member of the Eastern Star and helped with the Masonic Lodge/Eastern Star booth at the Elkhart County 4-H Fair. She volunteered at Goshen General Hospital and The Window. She is survived by two daughters, Rose (David) Wenger of Goshen, and Susan (Terry) Vogt of Warren, Michigan; a grandson, Aaron Wenger; a great-grandson, Edin Wenger; and caregiver, Kathy Oesch. She was preceded in death by her husband, Max; a granddaughter, Janet Rhinesmith in 1966 and a sister, Doris Niemeyer. Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m., Monday, January 8, 2007, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. An 11:00 a.m. Eastern Star service will be conducted at the funeral home followed by a graveside service in Oakridge Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial contributions may be given to Goshen Care at Home.
