Bernice L. Schroeder

Heaven was made one soul richer on April 10, 2018 as Bernice Schroeder, 101, of Goshen passed from this earth.

She was born October 27, 1916 in Pulaski, Pennsylvania to Elmer and Lorena (Miller) Detwiler.

Bernice studied Home Economics at Goshen College and went on to work as a seamstress before meeting the love of her life, Leander Schroeder. The couple wed in 1950 and raised four wonderful children together.

Bernice always had beautiful flower and vegetable gardens, from which she made countless pints of preserves - sweet ketchup, pickles, and grape jelly being some favorites of the grandchildren.

Bernice was also a talented baker. The cookie jar was always stocked, and family could count on heaps of pepper-nuts at holiday time.

Bernice’s sweet, giving spirit will be missed. She sewed thousands of school kit bags for Mennonite Central Committee over the years, quitting only when her sight deteriorated.

Bernice leaves behind a beautiful legacy and a loving family on this earth. She is survived by a daughter, Susan (Malcolm) Rhoades of New Castle; three sons, Richard Schroeder of Chicago, Dan (Kathy Van Elk) Schroeder of Elkhart, and Jeffrey (Marianne) Schroeder of New Paris; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean Mann Graber of Goshen; a brother-in-law, Gordon Yoder of Goshen; and a sister-in-law, Helen Joyce Detwiler of Goshen.

Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Esther Yoder, and four brothers, John, Delbert, Dale and Carl Detwiler.

Friends may call Friday, April 13, 2018 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen, and Saturday, April 14, 2018 at College Mennonite Church, Goshen, one hour prior to the 10:30 a.m. memorial service.

Burial will be at Elkhart Prairie Cemetery, Goshen at a later date.
