Bernice "Bernie" Eileen Miller, 99, passed away May 14, 2020 at Greencroft Healthcare.
She was born on October 14, 1920 in Elkhart to Ira M. Smith and Leona Marie Snyder. Bernie was a 1939 graduate of Concord High School, married Edward Miller February 24, 1940 and was a Goshen resident most of her life. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, daughter-in-law Linda Miller and 16 sisters and brothers: Evelyn Peck, Leroy Smith, Bernadine Ganger, June Zollinger, Marilyn Smith, Bev Albert, Blanche Gorce, Waneta Fergison and Charles, Madelyn, Duane, Calvin, R.B., Janice, Burnell and Burton Mahler.
Bernie is survived by her sons Skip Miller (Sherry Riedel) of Goshen and Jim (Cheri) Miller, ofThe Villages, Florida; and one sister, Gloria Johnson of Goshen. She also leaves behind grandchildren Anita (Brad) Fisher of Middlebury; Jeff (Amy) Miller of Syracuse; Malinda Miller-Bell of Charlestown; Ted (Jackie) Miller of Milan, Michigan and April (Dale) Lehman of Fort Wayne. She is survived by great-grandchildren Kate Fisher (Landen Hughes) of Elkhart; Landon Fisher of Chicago; Kinsey and Kayla Miller of Syracuse; Christian and Isaac Miller of Milan, Michigan; Brenden (Courtney) Lehman of Fort Wayne; Amanda Whitcomb of Charlestown, and Shawn (Brittney) Miller of Lady Lake, Florida; six great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grandson.
Bernie’s family was her main focus in life; but, she also loved reading, working puzzles, playing Solitaire on her computer, golf and playing Euchre and Cribbage at the VFW Post 985. She retired from Johnson/Penn Controls in 1986 after 35 years of service. Bernie volunteered for many years at the Salvation Army in Goshen where she prepared and served meals to local senior citizens as part of the REAL Services program. She was proud of her golf game and played every Thursday up until age 90. She was two-time Women’s Golf Club Champion at Wawasee Golf and Country Club. Bernie was a member of the Penn Athletic Association where she bowled for many years and was instrumental in starting their ladies golf league. She also belonged to the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
Visitation will be Friday, May 29, 2020, from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral service at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Violett Cemetery.
