Arlyn “Art” D. Reinhard, 81, passed away Thursday, November 2, 2023 at his home surrounded by family.
He was born July 12, 1942 in Ossian to Amos D. and Martha (Schweitzer) Reinhard.
On December 29, 1972 he married Patricia “Patti” Hendricks in Goshen.
Arlyn is survived by his wife, Patti; a daughter, Erika Watson, Topeka; a son, Rocky Reinhard, New Haven; seven grandchildren, Sierra, Schyler, Bradley, Paige, Keegan, Koen and Chase; five great-grandchildren, Apollo, Eden, Triton, Octavia and Beverly; a sister Ruth (Stan) Hood, Fort Wayne and a brother, David (Rita) Reinhard, Bluffton.
He graduated from Ossian High School in 1960, Huntington University in 1964 and Ball State University in 1965. He earned his masters and EDs in education from Indiana University.
Arlyn dedicated his life to public school education. He began his teaching career in 1965 at Whiteman Jr. High in Goshen, Indiana. In 1972 he began his school administration career in Iowa City, Iowa. He was also a school principal at Freshman High School, Warsaw, Indiana, Perry Central High School, Perry County, Mount Zion High School, Mount Zion, Illinois, Whitko High School, South Whitley, Indiana, Eastside High School, Butler, Indiana, and Northwestern High School, Kokomo.
During his career, Arlyn received numerous awards, including serving on an Indiana Congressional Committee for Education.
Following his retirement in 2006, Arlyn and his wife moved to Goshen. He was a skilled gardener and loved caring for and growing flowers, bushes, shrubs and trees. He also loved racquetball, pickle ball and walking. He was a life long fan of IU Basketball and Notre Dame Football, vacations in Traverse City, Michigan and Englewood, Florida.
Arlyn was a member of Plymouth United Church of Christ, where he served as a Deacon and the Church’s representative on the Niccum Scholarship Committee.
Arlyn was known for his friendliness (never met a stranger), his kindness, and his ornery sense of humor.
The Reinhard family wishes to thank the nurses at Goshen Hospital, nurses, CNAs, and therapists at Green Gables, The Laurels and Transitions Hospice nurses and CNAs for their loving care of Arlyn.
Visitation will be Monday, November 6, 2023 from 4 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday, November 7 from 11 a.m. until the 12 p.m. funeral service at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home.
Burial will follow at Violett Cemetery.
Memorial gifts may be directed to the Huntington University Memorial Fund for scholarships.
