Arlene K. Horst, 64, of Goshen, died late Monday night, March 6, 2006, at Goshen General Hospital where she had been a patient since February 15. She was born August 18, 1941, in Archbold, Ohio, to Roy and Selma (Gautsche) Sauder. On June 27, 1964, in Tedrow, Ohio, she married Oren F. Horst. He survives. From 1978 to 2001, Mrs. Horst was a 3rd and 4th grade teacher at Topeka Elementary School in the Title 1 and Gifted in Math and Reading. She co-created the Gifted and Talented program, refined and implemented the curricula and the program. She was the cornerstone of the Gifted and Talented Program. A 1959 graduate of Pettisville High School, Ohio, she attended both Hesston College and Goshen College, earning her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Goshen College in 1963. She received her Master’s Degree from Ball State University. A member of the Eighth Street Mennonite Church, Mrs. Horst was active in the Mennonite Women. She volunteered at The Depot in Goshen; served on the Bethany Christian Schools Board from 1997 to 2003; tutored for the Adult Literacy Program; and served on the first planning committee for Menno-Hof and edited their newsletter for nine years. Mrs. Horst also did two years of Voluntary Service, the first in 1982-83, in Washington D.C. serving at the International Guest House operated through the Allegheny Mennonite Conference. The second year was in 2003-04 in Salem, Oregon serving at Western Mennonite School. Mrs. Horst is survived by her husband, Oren; two sons, O. Douglas (Becky) Horst of Birmingham, Alabama and Eric E. Horst of Quakertown, Pennsylvania, and four grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Virginia Frank and Eloise (Meredith) Yoder, both of Archbold, Ohio, and Joan (Okechukwu) Ozuzu of Lady Lake, Florida; and five brothers, Robert (Pam) Sauder of Pioneer, Ohio, Duane (Nedra) Sauder of Archbold, Ohio, John (Lois) Sauder of Goshen, Wendell (Veronica) Sauder of Hesston, Kansas and Neil Sauder of Wichita, Kansas. Friends will be received 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, March 9 and 10 at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. A prayer service will be followed by burial in Violett Cemetery, Goshen on Saturday, March 11, 2006. An 11:00 a.m. memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2006, at Eighth Street Mennonite Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethany Christian School or Menno-Hof.
