Anatoly I. Kononov, 92, of Goshen, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, June 6, 2015 at Greencroft Healthcare. He was born April 30, 1923 in St. Petersburg, Russia to Ivan and Ekaterina (Alexseeva) Kononov, the seventh of nine children. On March 17, 1946 he married Nina O. Aug. She died in 1997. Anatoly is survived by a daughter, Alexandra "Sasha" (Andrei) Chugunov of Cincinatti; a grandson, Leonid (Natalia) Chugunova of Constantine, Michigan; and two great-grandchildren, Sasha and Victor Chugunov. A decorated veteran, Anatoly served in the Red Army during World War II on the Leningrad front. He lost his parents, a sister and a brother during the war because of starvation while the German Army surrounded Leningrad. After the war, Anatoly graduated from the Technical College in Leningrad and worked at the Krasnaja Zaria telephone plant for 59 years, until retiring as the mechanical department production manager in 1996. After losing his wife in 1997, Anatoly came to the US to visit his daughter and decided to stay. He enjoyed singing and playing guitar and accordion. He was a parishioner of the Virgin Protection Russian Orthodox Church in Goshen. Friends may call Tuesday, June 9, 2015 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home where a Trisagion will be conducted at 7 p.m. A 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 10, 2015, funeral service will be conducted at the Holy Virgin Protection Russian Orthodox Church, 61325 County Road 21, Goshen. Burial will follow in Oakridge Cemetery, Goshen.
