Alvina Becker Nickel, 99, of Goshen, Indiana, and formerly of Elkhart, died Sunday, November 9, 2008, at Greencroft Healthcare. She was born in Marion, South Dakota on December 14, 1908, to Jacob B. and Elizabeth (Unruh) Becker. She married Peter J. Nickel in Marion, South Dakota on June 1, 1937. He died on September 25, 1978. Mrs. Nickel moved to the area from Minnesota in 1990. She served with her husband as a missionary in Alaska for 33 years. They were members at Gospel Mennonite Church in Mountain Lake, Minnesota. She was an associate member of Silverwood Mennonite Church, Goshen. She is survived by three daughters, Carol Nickel of Elkhart, Eileen (Ron) Stadtlander of Katy, Texas, and Lynette (Bill) Wilson of Soldotna, Alaska; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Martha Becker, of Freeman, South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a daughter, Twila Nickel; four sisters, Susie Schroeder, Marie Becker, Eva Schroeder, and Helen Thomas; and eight brothers, David, Joseph, Rueben, Sam, Henry, Anton, Aaron, and Jake Becker. Friends may call 2 to 5 p.m., Friday, November 14, 2008 at the Meetinghouse, Greencroft and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at Sermon on the Mount Chapel at Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Elkhart. An 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 15, 2008 funeral service will be conducted at Sermon on the Mount Chapel. Rev. David Moser will be conducting services in Elkhart, and in Minnesota the Rev. Merwin Dick will officiate. A private family graveside service will be held on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at Mountain Lake Cemetery, Mountain Lake, Minnesota, followed by a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Lakeview Bible Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Solid Rock Ministries, Soldotna, Alaska and Goldenrod Mennonite Disabilities, Goshen.
