Allen Merle Horst

April 17, 1939 — September 9, 2018

Allen Merle Horst, 79, of Goshen, died Sunday, September 9, 2018, from complications following a stroke.

He is survived by his grateful wife, Viola of Goshen; son, Adrian of South Bend; brother, Ray (Violet) of Virginia; brother-in-law, John Bell, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews in the U.S. and Canada.

Allen graduated from Hesston College, Goshen College and Indiana University, Bloomington, holding degrees in history and education.  He worked for two years in alternative service as a PAXman in the Belgian Congo from 1960 to 1962.  This experience left a lasting impression on his life.

He enjoyed being a World Citizen and traveled often.  Before his eyesight began deteriorating, Allen was an avid reader, especially in history.

Allen was an efficient, conscientious and artistic craftsman building homes in Elkhart County.  This was his most satisfying and fulfilling career.

He was known by friends and family as a person of great humor, wisdom and faith.  He especially enjoyed congregational singing and was a member of several choirs and quartets.  Also, he was a good writer, lover of children and caretaker of nature.

Allen had great stamina and was a wonderful support for the family in times of crisis.

A memorial service and reception will be held Thursday, September 20, 2018, at 10 a.m. at College Mennonite Church.

Memorial contributions may be given to Mennonite Central Committee or Center for Hospice Care (Elkhart).
