Albert Mcdowell

Albert McDowell, 99, of Goshen, died Friday, October 28, 2022, at home.

He was born July 20, 1923 in Norristown, Pennsylvania to Marion B. McDowell.

He attended John Bartram High School in Philadelphia.  Al served in World War II with the Army Air Force in the Philippines and Biak.  He was a part of the Philippine Liberation and received a bronze star in the Asia Pacific Campaign.  Al went to Indiana University, Bloomington and received degrees in Chemistry and Public Health and a master’s degree in education.

On May 22, 1955, he married Bonnie L. Werling in Ossian.

She survives along with six children, Eric McDowell of Indianapolis, Anthony “Tony” (Kathy) McDowell of Milford, Paul (Darcy) McDowell of Stillwater, Minnesota, Lori Edwards of Taos, New Mexico, Jenny (Jake) Free of Mishawaka and Mary McDowell of Walkerton; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A math teacher, Mr. McDowell taught at Concord Junior High and New Paris Elementary.  He was also a longtime tennis coach for many local schools including, Concord, Wawasee, Fairfield and Bethany Christian.  Al was inducted into the Indiana High School Tennis Hall of Fame in 2001.

Al loved to play the piano, especially Jazz music, and he also composed music.  He developed two companies, Site-Read Music, to help students learn to read and understand music and Nu-Vision Educational Products for student math development.  He enjoyed meeting his friends at Olympia Candy Kitchen, County Seat and Tony's Restaurant.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Goshen and Indiana Retired Teachers’ Association.

Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 3, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home.  There will also be visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, at Faith Lutheran Church, 202 S Greene Rd, Goshen, followed by an 11 a.m. funeral service.  Pastor Jess King will officiate.

Cremation will follow the service with burial at Benton Lutheran Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be given to Faith Lutheran Church.
