Adlai Schrock, 79, passed away peacefully on Wednesday November 5, 2025.
He was born August 28, 1946 in Arthur, Illinois to Andrew and Druscilla (Yoder) Schrock as the 4th of 6 children. From his Amish parents he inherited a strong, quiet work ethic and a joy of working with his hands. He was a gifted carpenter and could trim a house faster than any other carpenter around. Initially he went to Sarasota, Florida to work in construction, but eventually he moved back north because of the hot Florida summers and settled in Goshen, Indiana.
Adlai married Jane Cripe on June 9, 1973 after meeting her on a blind date. They had two children: Jeffrey (Ann Mereness) Schrock, born in 1975, and Marla (Brian) Current, born in 1978.
Despite no high school education, he possessed a keen business mind. In 1975 the recesssion meant little work was available through his employer, so he started building his own homes. Within four years, he had built 10-12 homes. He educated himself by going to career workshops, reading books and listening to experienced people in the field. He founded Schrock Homes, Greenfield Landscape Services, Schrock Commercial in 2006, and finally Schrock Realty Group in 2008. In 2023 he sold Schrock Homes and retired. By the time of his retirement, Schrock Homes had built over 1,820 homes, small and large commercial projects, and started 18 communities and subdivisions, most of them in Goshen, but spanning from Wakarusa-Nappanee to Shipshewana. Adlai served his community well.
He was an active member of Rotary Club and, for a time, was President of Home Builders Association of Elkhart County. He was a regular supporter of Oaklawn and served on its board for 10 yrs. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He served his family and God well. He was always kind, full of wisdom and soft-spoken but determined. His actions always spoke louder than his words. He loved God, his church and his family. He loved watching sports, especially Colts football, Purdue basketball, football, and Cardinals baseball. He was an avid golfer, playing regularly in Goshen golf leagues.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jane; children, Jeffrey (Ann Mereness) Schrock and Marla (Brian) Current; four grandchildren, Carter Schrock, Kennedy Schrock, Elizabeth Current, and Andrew Current; and siblings, Irene Otto of Arthur, Illinois, Joe (Sarah) Schrock of Lovington, Illinois, and Howard (Mary) Schrock of Cadwell, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ervin and Melvin Schrock.
Visitation will be held Sunday, November 9, from 2–4 p.m. and 6–8 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. The funeral service will take place Monday, November 10, at 11:00 a.m. at Nappanee Missionary Church. A private burial at Yellow Creek Cemetery will be held prior to the funeral.
